Convict in Undead Apes NFT Fraud Dies by Suicide Before Sentencing

The tragic death of Burman Jerry Nowlin, a 21-year-old convicted in the $400,000 Undead Apes NFT fraud, has cast a somber shadow over an already troubling case. Nowlin took his own life on December 21, 2024, just weeks before he was to be sentenced on federal charges of wire fraud and money laundering.

Nowlin, along with co-conspirator Devin Alan Rhoden, 25, orchestrated a fraudulent scheme involving two Solana-based NFT collections, which were sold to unsuspecting investors. The scam promised high returns, false partnerships with reputable companies, and exclusive benefits for buyers. The scheme fell apart when a third collection was abruptly canceled, prompting an investigation that uncovered the fraud.

In November 2024, Nowlin was convicted, with his sentencing scheduled for January 2025. He faced up to five years in federal prison. Rhoden, who was also found guilty, will still be sentenced as planned.

Nowlin’s death, confirmed as a suicide by his family, has shocked many and added an emotional dimension to the case. His family expressed their heartbreak, underscoring the profound toll the legal proceedings and public scrutiny may have taken on him.

This incident highlights the devastating consequences of financial crimes—not only for the victims but also for the perpetrators and their families. While justice will proceed for Rhoden, the case serves as a stark reminder of the ethical and personal repercussions of fraudulent actions.
