Philippine agency empowers youth with blockchain and NFT education

The Philippine Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) has taken a proactive role in educating the youth on blockchain, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies. In a tech forum held on September 20, 2024, the agency aimed to empower young minds by introducing them to these cutting-edge technologies and their real-world applications. The initiative is designed to prepare the next generation for emerging job markets and foster innovation across various industries.

Participants learned the fundamentals of blockchain technology, with experts like Roxanne S. Aviñante highlighting the increasing demand for blockchain expertise. Additionally, Marc Jerome T. Tulali discussed NFTs and the diverse applications of blockchain, from voting systems to immutable information storage. The forum also introduced the "Self-Sovereign Identity Empowerment: Reinventing Rights and Attributes" (SIERRA), a blockchain-based intellectual property management system in development.

Students were also exposed to blockchain's potential across sectors such as gaming, healthcare, decentralized finance (DeFi), and even central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). The forum further delved into the PHPC stablecoin, a local digital currency tested in collaboration with Coins.ph, which aims to enhance digital asset trading and remittance services—a key sector in the Philippines.

This initiative by DOST-ASTI reflects the Philippines' commitment to integrating blockchain and digital technologies into its economy, equipping the youth with skills that will shape the future of various industries.
