South Korea’s Jeju Island to Launch NFT-powered Visitors Card

Jeju Island is set to revolutionize tourism with the launch of NFT-powered visitor cards, aimed at attracting tech-savvy Millennials and Gen Z tourists. This innovation will offer exclusive perks like discounts, travel subsidies, and local attractions benefits, all linked to NFTs. The initiative reflects Jeju’s desire to modernize its tourism experience while encouraging repeat visits, starting with a pilot program for domestic visitors in late 2025.

These NFT cards will also be integrated with Tamna Jeon, the local blockchain-based stablecoin, designed to support the island’s economy. The cards will be linked to rechargeable prepaid options that incentivize both merchants and customers. Although the blockchain technology behind the cards hasn’t been revealed, the project marks another step in Jeju’s commitment to integrating blockchain into its public sector, including traffic management and VAT refunds for tourists.

The initiative is part of a broader push by Jeju to become a tech-forward destination, following its earlier attempts to become a cashless international city. However, strict regulations surrounding ICOs and NFTs in South Korea have created challenges, especially after the Financial Services Commission (FSC) issued new guidelines in 2024 that differentiated NFTs from traditional cryptocurrencies.

These obstacles, Jeju’s continued push toward integrating crypto and blockchain reflects a desire to stay at the forefront of digital innovation, blending tourism with the latest in fintech.
